This flickr find photo comes from JP Weigle’s Photostream. Pictured are a pair of 1960′s British Made ‘Cyclo’ spint carriers. According to Weigle:
These went behind the front quick release and allowed one to carry their race wheels to an event. A toe strap went around the wheel at the top and also went around the end of the handlebars.
If you head over to Chris 531′s Photostream, you can see the above accessory in action

On a personal note, this is a very hard concept for me to grasp. One bike (yes, ONE) that does it all? Head to the race, strip all the mudguards, lights and racks off your bike. Put on your ‘formal shoes’, race, then load up and head home. It’s a novel idea- but then you would only need ONE bike [insert smiley here].

The photographer is Bernard Thompson, not the cyclist. According to cyclinginfo.co.uk he’s Horace Mouatt of the Surrey Road CC.

It is also a bit tricky to ride a track bike with sprint carriers, most have shorter wheelbases than road bikes, so you are more likely to catch your toeclip/shoe on the front wheel/suspended wheel when turning or manouvering. This would generally knock the suspended wheel off and if you didn’t grab it very quickly, while also braking as gently as you dared, you’d find yourself in the ditch with you race wheels nicely flattened by the passing traffic. Hard braking was difficult as the front wheel was usually loose!
Incidentally, Herbert doesn’t have the the obligatory wheel covers on his race wheels; commonly an old tubular (sliced open with the tube removed) or an old, cut down 27×1-1/4 HP tyre. These would have increased the drag significantly, making his warm-up that much more effective.
