Hello readers of Cycle Zine!

My name is William and I will be regularly updating this blog with various pictures I take everyday that are bicycle related.

I love bikes. In short, I’m a cyclist. I geek out over all kinds of bikes, wrench on bikes and of course I ride bikes. I tend to get a little more creative with the bikes I build up myself, so I hope you enjoy the photos you see here. You can also see more of my photos on my Flickr .

Since we are already two months into this new year, I’ll share some photos that I’ve taken the past month or so to catch you up on life on the other side of the Bay.

Day 2: Fixed gear at Cole Coffee in Rockridge.

I admit I don’t ride my track bike very often anymore. It was fun for a while and sometimes still is, but gears and brakes are so much more versatile and fun.

Day 4: En route to Alameda for a burrito.

Day 22: Veloshop in Portland

This beauty of a machine is Phil Wood’s spoke-cutting tool. No need to purchase correct length spokes anymore. Just buy long spokes, determine the spoke length you need and put the spoke in and turn the wooden crank. The machine cuts the spoke and threads about 1cm on the end all in one crank of the arm!

Day 22: Veloshop – the most beautiful store front I have ever witnessed.

Day 24: We need Bakfiets in California.

I believe Clever Cycles are the only Bakfiets dealer in the U.S. I rented one for about an hour just to ride to see what it would be like, I’ve concluded they are slow bikes (obviously not meant for speed), but they carry cargo very well. I put a Brompton in the wooden crate on front and steering and the overall ride felt the same. This would not be the case with an Xtracycle as you could feel the load a lot more.

Day 30: Phil Wood

New wheels for my Surly build. Phil Wood is another local bicycle component company located in San Jose, CA, near the 101. They currently have 20 employees working in the office/factory and that has been the greatest number it has ever been. Everything is produced in their San Jose office/factory and they are known for their polished goodies and indestructrable and smooth sealed bearings. My hub of choice!

Day 31: Custom Surly decals

I’m currently building a Surly Karate Monkey 29′er (cruiser/sidewalk CRUSHER!). I find stock Surly decals distasteful so I set out to design some of my own Surly decals because I wanted something better looking. I came up with this bubbly logo as it resembles something from retro-bubbly script car decal. I got these made at My Trick Pony on 14th and Church. They specialize in custom graphics on clothing, but they can also make these nice durable vinyl decals for you. Highly recommended.

Looking forward to sharing my bicycle adventures with you around the Bay! Stay tuned.
